TO THE ANNIVERSARY OF PROFESSOR EVGENY MIKHAILOVICH MARGORIN - NEUROSURGEON AND TOPOGRAPHIC ANATOMISTS
Abstract
The article is dedicated to Evgeny Mikhailovich Margorin (1908–1984), MD, professor, an outstanding neurosurgeon, neurotraumatologist, a well-known researcher of individual and age-related anatomical variability of childhood. The range of scientific interests of Evgeny Mikhailovich was very wide: from topical issues of clinical and operative surgery, surgical anatomy of childhood to neurosurgery and neurotraumatology. E.M. Margorin widely developed the teachings of V.N. Shevkunenko, in particular, when studying microanatomy and microtopography of vascular nerve complexes of the extremities, made conclusions about the need to take into account the data obtained in diagnosis and surgical treatment. During the Second World War, he headed the neurosurgical service of the evacuation hospital on the 2nd Ukrainian Front, where he personally performed more than 1,000 operations for skull and brain injuries. In the post-war period, he summarized the experience of a neurosurgeon in his scientific works: “Topographic anatomy of the head”, “Operations on the cerebral part of the head”, “A short course of operative surgery and topographic anatomy” (1950), his works were published on the pages of the multi-volume manual “Experience of Soviet medicine in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945” (1948). From 1955 to 1984. Evgeny Mikhailovich headed the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy at the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute, where he carried out extensive pedagogical work and continued the teaching of V.N. Shevkunenko in the study of individual and age-related variability of organs in children. His monographs “Operative surgery of childhood” (1960, 1967) and “Topographic and anatomical features of newborns” (1977) are reference books for anatomists and pediatric surgeons. Evgeny Mikhailovich successfully combined his teaching work with the position of deputy Director for Science at the Neurosurgical Institute named after Professor A.L. Polenov, where he created an experimental laboratory. Here, together with his students and graduate students, he studied the activity of subcortical structures of the brain, laid the foundations of stereotactic surgery of brain diseases.
